The place is at the confluence of the Cache River in the Ohio River , which forms the border with Kentucky . Interstate 57 , which connects Chicago and Memphis, runs along the western edge of Mound City . Illinois State Route 34 runs through the center of Mound City and runs along the Ohio . All other roads are internal connecting roads as well as subordinate, partly unpaved roads.
