Thomas Henry Burke (politician)

Thomas Henry Burke (born May 6, 1904 in Toledo , Ohio , †  September 12, 1959 in Arlington , Virginia ) was an American politician . Between 1949 and 1951 he represented the state of Ohio in the US House of Representatives .

Life

Thomas Burke attended St. Patrick's Grade School and St. John's College in Toledo. Between 1923 and 1927 he served as a pharmacist in the United States Navy , whose reserve he was then a member until 1939. From 1928 to 1937 he was with Dana Corp. employed in Toledo. He then worked for the United Automobile Workers union until 1948 . Politically, he was a member of the Democratic Party . He was a member of the Ohio House of Representatives in 1941 and 1942 ; from 1944 to 1948 he was a member of the Toledo City Council. In 1948 he was deputy mayor there.

In the 1948 congressional election , Burke was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the ninth constituency of Ohio , where he succeeded Republican Homer A. Ramey on January 3, 1949 . Since he was not confirmed in 1950, he could only serve one term in Congress until January 3, 1951 . This was shaped by the events of the Cold War . In 1951 Burke became an advisor to the National Production Authority . A year later, he applied unsuccessfully to return to Congress. He then moved to Alexandria , Virginia, where he represented the interests of his union before the legislature. He died on September 12, 1959 in Arlington and was buried in the national cemetery there.
