Company headquarters in Maumee

Dana Incorporated is a US automotive supplier based in Maumee , Ohio.

history

The company was founded in 1904 by Clarence Spicer under the name CW Spicer in Plainfield , New Jersey , where he manufactured jacketed universal joints , patented by him . The first universal joints, sometimes called Spicer Joints in the United States to this day, were supplied to the Corbin Motor Vehicle Company in Connecticut. Soon after, Buick , Olds Motor Works and Mack Brothers were among the customers. In 1914, the lawyer Charles Dana took control of the company and rose to managerial positions in the company. An important company takeover was completed in 1919: with the Salisbury Axle Company, an important manufacturer of vehicle axles was incorporated into the company. Nine years later, in 1928, Spicer relocated its headquarters to the Toledo region in order to benefit from the greater proximity to the automobile city of Detroit . After company founder Spicer died in 1939, his company was renamed Dana Corporation in 1946, but the Spicer name continued to be used as a brand name for products related to the powertrain. Clark-Hurth (gearboxes and axles) has been part of the Dana Group since 1997. Clark-Hurth was taken over by Ingersoll Rand . A takeover attempt by competitor ArvinMeritor in 2003 was unsuccessful. Today Dana has 139 facilities in 33 countries. Today, Dana produces, among other things, axles, drive trains and transmissions for the international automotive industry. In fiscal 2017, Ford was responsible for 22% of all orders.

The company has been listed on the stock exchange since 1922. Dana is listed on the Fortune 500 list of top-selling US companies.
