Maumee is a city in Lucas County in the American state of Ohio . Maumee is a suburb of Toledo and is located on the Maumee River . The city has a population of around 15,000 (as of the 2000 census ).
history
The area around the current city of Maumee was settled in prehistoric times. In the 18th century the area was contested between the armed forces of France, Great Britain and the American independence movement as well as the North American indigenous people, since the occupation of the Maumee River meant control of an important east-west transport axis. With the Battle of Battle of Fallen Timbers in 1794 the fighting reached a temporary climax. When the British-American War ended in 1814, the fighting was over. The area was now under the control of the United States.
In 1817 a land map was created and the place was released for settlement. In 1827 an editor of the Ohio Gazetteer prophesied the place, which at the time consisted of only a few shops and a hotel: if the projected Wabash and Erie Canal would connect at this point, there was no doubt that this would be an important town (Should the planned Wabash-Erie Canal will pass this point, this place will undoubtedly develop into an important city). Although the completion of the canal accelerated Maumee's growth, economic development was overshadowed by the faster growing neighboring city of Toledo. It was not until 1952 that Maumee received city rights.
