H. Clay Van Voorhis

Henry Clay Van Voorhis (born May 11, 1852 in Nashport , Muskingum County , Ohio , †  December 12, 1927 in Zanesville , Ohio) was an American politician . Between 1893 and 1905 he represented the state of Ohio in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Clay Van Voorhis attended public schools in his home country and then Denison University in Granville . After a subsequent law degree at the Cincinnati Law School and his admission as a lawyer, he began to work in Zanesville from 1875 in this profession. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Republican Party . In 1884 and 1916 he took part as a delegate at the respective Republican National Conventions . From 1885 to 1893 he was President of the Citizens' National Bank of Zanesville .

In the 1892 congressional election , Van Voorhis was elected to the 15th  constituency of Ohio in the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where he succeeded Michael D. Harter on March 4, 1893 . After five re-elections, he was able to complete six legislative terms in Congress by March 3, 1905 . During this time the Spanish-American War of 1898 fell . During his time in Congress, Voorhis was a member of the Committee on Appropriations . In 1904 he renounced another candidacy.

From 1905 Clay Van Voorhis was again President of the Citizens' National Bank of Zanesville . He also served as the curator of Marietta College . He died on December 12, 1927 in Zanesville, where he was also buried. He had five children with his Fray Mary.
