Francis B. De Witt

Francis Byron De Witt (born March 11, 1849 in Jackson County , Indiana , †  March 21, 1929 in Standish , Michigan ) was an American politician . Between 1895 and 1897 he represented the state of Ohio in the US House of Representatives .

Career

In 1854, Francis De Witt and his parents moved to a farm in Delaware County , Ohio. In 1861, at the beginning of the civil war, at the age of twelve, he joined the Union Army , but had to quit service for temporary health reasons. He rejoined the army in 1862 and served until the end of the war. In the meantime he became a prisoner of war and was imprisoned in Libby Prison , among other places . After the war he attended the public schools in Galena , the National Normal School in Lebanon and the Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware . In 1872 he moved to Paulding , where he taught as a teacher. After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1875, he began working in this profession in Paulding until 1891. He was also active in agriculture. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Republican Party . Between 1892 and 1895 he was a member of the Ohio House of Representatives .

In the congressional election of 1894 , De Witt was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the fifth constituency of Ohio , where he succeeded Democrat Dennis D. Donovan on March 4, 1895 . Since he was not confirmed in 1896, he could only serve one term in Congress until March 3, 1897 .

After his time in the US House of Representatives, Francis De Witt worked again in agriculture near Paulding. In 1903 he moved to Standish, Michigan, where he practiced as a lawyer. Later he also acted there as a notary ( Register of Deeds ). Between 1920 and 1922 he was a member of the Michigan House of Representatives . From 1926 until his death, he was a prosecutor in Arenac County . He died on March 21, 1929 in Standish and was buried in Paulding.
