Philadelph Van Trump (born November 15, 1810 in Lancaster , Ohio , †  July 31, 1874 there ) was an American politician . Between 1867 and 1873 he represented the state of Ohio in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Philadelph Van Trump attended the public schools in his home country and then completed an apprenticeship in printing. He then published two papers in Lancaster. After a subsequent law degree and his admission as a lawyer, he began to work in Lancaster in 1838 in this profession. Politically, he was a member of the Whig Party at the time . In June 1852 he took part as a delegate at their federal party conference in Baltimore . After the dissolution of the Whigs, he switched to the American Party , for which he ran unsuccessfully for the office of governor of Ohio in 1856 . In 1860 he was a delegate and president to two state conventions in Ohio. Between 1862 and 1867 he served as an appeal judge. In 1863, 1864, and 1865 he applied unsuccessfully for a judge's position at the Supreme Court of Ohio . In the meantime he had joined the Democratic Party . In 1869 he was president of the regional Democratic Party convention in Ohio.

In the congressional election of 1866 , Van Trump was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the twelfth constituency of Ohio , where he succeeded William E. Finck on March 4, 1867 . After two re-elections, he was able to complete three legislative terms in Congress by March 3, 1873 . Until 1869, the work of Congress was marked by tension between Republicans and President Andrew Johnson , which culminated in a narrowly unsuccessful impeachment trial. In 1868 and 1870 the 14th and 15th amendments to the Constitution were ratified.

In 1872, Van Trump renounced another candidacy. After the end of his time in the US House of Representatives, he practiced again as a lawyer in Lancaster, where he died on July 31, 1874.
