Marcia Carolyn "Marcy" Kaptur (born June 17, 1946 in Toledo , Ohio ) is an American politician of the Democratic Party . Since January 3, 1983, she is a member of the House of Representatives of the United States for the 9th  congressional district of the state of Ohio.

biography

Marcy Kaptur was born in Toledo as the daughter of Polish immigrants. Her family owned a small supermarket in Toledo. In 1964 she graduated from St. Ursulas Academy, a Catholic girls' school, with a high school diploma. She earned her Bachelor of Arts in 1968 from the University of Wisconsin – Madison , and her Masters in Urban Planning in 1974 from the University of Michigan . In 1981 she completed another degree in urban planning at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology . She then worked as a city planner.

In the 1982 congressional elections , Marcy Kaptur was elected as her party's candidate to succeed Ed Weber in the 9th constituency of Ohio State in the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where she took up her new mandate on January 3, 1983. As she was re-elected in all subsequent elections, including the one in 2016, she can continue to exercise her mandate today. Her latest legislative term runs until January 3, 2019. Her time as congressman included the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks , the Iraq war and the military operation in Afghanistan . She is or was a member of the grant committee . Previously, she was also on the Budget Committee . She is also a member of several Congressional Caucuses . She is supporting Bernie Sanders in the run-up to the 2016 presidential election .
