William Howard (politician)

William Howard (born December 31, 1817 in Jefferson County , Virginia , †  June 1, 1891 in Batavia , Ohio ) was an American politician . Between 1859 and 1861 he represented the state of Ohio in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Born in what is now West Virginia , William Howard attended public schools in his homeland. After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1840, he began to work in this profession in Batavia. Between 1845 and 1849 he worked as a public prosecutor. This time was interrupted by his active participation in the Mexican-American War , in which he served as a lieutenant in an infantry unit. Politically, he joined the Democratic Party . Between 1850 and 1852 he was a member of the Ohio Senate .

In the congressional election of 1858 Howard was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the sixth constituency of Ohio , where he succeeded Joseph R. Cockerill on March 4, 1859 . Until March 3, 1861 he was able to complete a legislative period in Congress . This was shaped by the events in the immediate run-up to the civil war . Between August 1861 and February 1863 Howard took part in the Civil War as a major in the Union Army . He was again assigned to the infantry. After that he practiced as a lawyer again. He died on June 1, 1891 in Batavia, where he was also buried.
