Charles Phelps Taft

Charles Phelps Taft (* 21st December 1843 in Cincinnati , Ohio ; † 31 December 1929 ) was an American politician of the Republican Party . From 1895 to 1897 he was a member of the House of Representatives of the United States for the first  congressional district of the state of Ohio.

biography

Charles Phelps Taft was born in Cincinnati to Alphonso Taft . The future US President William Howard Taft was his half-brother.

In 1864 he graduated from Yale University , 1866 from Columbia University . He studied at two universities Jura . He received another degree in 1867 from the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg . In 1869 he opened a law firm in Cincinnati. In 1879 he became an editor at the Cincinnati Times-Star , now the Cincinnati Post .

In 1895 he was elected to the US House of Representatives for the 1st District of Ohio. He represented the interests of the district in the House for only one electoral term, and in 1897 he resigned from Congress.

After retiring from politics, he returned to the media business. From 1914 to 1916 he was the owner of the Chicago Cubs baseball team .

Taft was married to the theater owner Anna Sinton from 1873 until his death . With her he had a son. He died in his native town in 1929 and was buried in Spring Grove Cemetery .

The small Texan town of Taft was named after him in 1904.
