William Hanes Ayres (1965)

William Hanes Ayres (born February 5, 1916 in Eagle Rock , Botetourt County , Virginia , †  December 27, 2000 in Columbia , Maryland ) was an American politician . Between 1951 and 1971 he represented the state of Ohio in the US House of Representatives .

Career

In his youth, William Ayres and his parents moved to West Virginia and then to Lorain County , Ohio. He attended Weller Township High School . In 1936 he graduated from Western Reserve University in Cleveland . Between 1936 and 1944 he was an Akron heating accessory seller. During the final phase of World War II , he served in the US Army until December 17, 1945 . From 1946 he was president of Akron-based company Ayres Heating & Insulation Co. Politically, he joined the Republican Party .

In the 1950 congressional election , Ayres was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 14th  constituency of Ohio , where he succeeded Democrat Walter B. Huber on January 3, 1951 . After nine re-elections, he was able to complete ten legislative terms in Congress by January 3, 1971 . During his time in Congress, the Cold War , the Korean War and, domestically, the civil rights movement and the Vietnam War fell . In 1970 he was not re-elected.

After the end of his time in the US House of Representatives, William Ayres no longer appeared politically. He died in Columbia on December 27, 2000 and was buried in Arlington National Cemetery , Virginia.
