William E. Haynes

William Elisha Haynes (born October 19, 1829 in Hoosick Falls , New York , †  December 5, 1914 in Fremont , Ohio ) was an American politician . Between 1889 and 1893 he represented the state of Ohio in the US House of Representatives .

Career

William Haynes was a cousin of Congressman George William Palmer (1818–1916). In 1839 he and his parents moved to the town of Lower Sandusky, Ohio, now Fremont, where he attended public schools. He then completed an apprenticeship in the printing trade, where he worked for two newspapers. In 1848 and 1849 he worked on a steamer in Lake Superior . Between 1850 and 1856, Haynes was in Fremont in trade; from 1856 to 1860 he served as an auditor in Sandusky County . During the Civil War he served in various units in the Union Army between 1861 and 1864 . He rose to lieutenant colonel. In 1866 and 1867 he was the chief tax officer in Ohio's Ninth Financial District. At the same time he worked in trade again until 1873. From 1873 until his death he worked in the banking industry. Politically, he joined the Democratic Party . In the years 1880 and 1884 he took part as a delegate at the respective Democratic National Conventions .

In the congressional elections of 1888 , Haynes was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the tenth constituency of Ohio , where he succeeded Jacob Romeis on March 4, 1889 . After re-election, he was able to complete two legislative terms in Congress until March 3, 1893 . From 1891 he represented the seventh district of his state there as the successor to Henry Lee Morey . In 1892 he renounced another candidacy.

After the end of his time in the US House of Representatives, William Haynes worked again in the banking industry. He died on December 5, 1914 in Fremont, where he was also buried.
