Chalmers Pangburn Wylie (born November 23, 1920 in Norwich , Muskingum County , Ohio , †  August 14, 1998 in Columbus , Ohio) was an American politician . Between 1967 and 1993 he represented the state of Ohio in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Chalmers Wylie grew up in Pataskala , where he attended public schools. He then studied at Otterbein College and Ohio State University . During the Second World War he served in the US Army , where he was promoted to first lieutenant in the 30th Infantry Division. After the war he was a lieutenant colonel in the United States Army Reserve . After completing a law degree at Harvard University and being admitted to the bar in 1948, he began to work as a lawyer. In 1949 and 1950 he was an Assistant City Attorney with the legal advisors of the City of Columbus; from 1951 to 1954 he was the Assistant Attorney General of Ohio. From 1953 to 1956 he also headed the legal department of the city of Columbus. In 1957 he worked for the Ohio Bureau of Workman's Compensation . In the same year he became a member of the governor's staff and president of the Ohio Municipal League . Between 1959 and 1968 he practiced as a private lawyer. Politically, he became a member of the Republican Party . He was a member of the Ohio State Legislature for three terms.

In the 1966 congressional election , Wylie was elected to the 15th  constituency of Ohio in the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where he succeeded Democrat Robert T. Secrest on January 3, 1967 . After twelve re-elections, he was able to complete a total of 13 legislative terms in Congress by January 3, 1993 . During this time, among other things, the end of the Vietnam War and the civil rights movement, as well as the Watergate affair in 1974 .

In 1992, Chalmers Wylie waived another congressional candidacy. After his tenure in the US House of Representatives, he worked as a lawyer in Columbus, where he died on August 14, 1998.
