Population development
According to the 2000 census, 10,249 people lived here in 3,922 households and 2,914 families. The population density was 138.8 inhabitants per km ². The racial the population was composed of 94.58% White, 2.96% African American, 0.34% Native American, 0.54% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, and 0.56% other ethnic groups. 1.02% were descended from two or more races. 1.01% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 3,922 households, 38.10% had children and adolescents under the age of 18 living with them. 59.90% were married couples living together, 10.70% were a single mother, 25.70% were non-families, 20.90% consisted of single households and 7.80% had someone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.59 and the average family size was 3.00.
