John Martin Vorys (born June 16, 1896 in Lancaster , Ohio , †  August 25, 1968 in Columbus , Ohio) was an American politician . Between 1939 and 1959 he represented the state of Ohio in the US House of Representatives .

Career

John Vorys attended public schools in Lancaster and Columbus. During the First World War , he served in the European theater of war as a pilot in the US Navy Air Corps . In 1919 he graduated from Yale University . In 1919 and 1920 he was a teacher at the Chinese branch of Yale College in Changsha . From 1921 to 1922 he was an assistant secretary member of the American delegation to disarmament negotiations in Washington, DC After studying law at Ohio State University and being admitted to the bar in 1923, he began working in this profession in Columbus. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Republican Party . In 1923 and 1924 he was a member of the Ohio House of Representatives ; from 1925 to 1926 he was a member of the State Senate . He was then from 1929 to 1930 Minister of Aviation in Ohio.

In the 1938 congressional elections , Vorys was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington in the twelfth constituency of his state, where he succeeded Democrat Arthur P. Lamneck on January 3, 1939 . After nine re-elections, he was able to complete ten legislative terms in Congress by January 3, 1959 . By 1941, the last of the Roosevelt government's New Deal laws were passed there. Since 1941, the work of the Congress was also shaped by the events of the Second World War and its consequences. His time in Congress also saw the start of the Cold War , the Korean War and, domestically, the civil rights movement .

In 1951, Vorys was an American delegate to the General Assembly of the United Nations ; from 1949 to 1959 he served as regent board member of the Smithsonian Institution . In 1958 he renounced another congressional candidacy. After serving in the US House of Representatives, Vorys returned to practice as a lawyer. He died on August 25, 1968 in Columbus, where he was also buried.
