James Traficant
James Anthony Traficant, Jr. (* 8 May 1941 in Youngstown , Ohio ; † 27. September 2014 ) was an American politician of the Democratic Party and member of the US House of Representatives for Ohio , who made the 2002 US Congress excluded has been.
biography
After attending Cardinal Mooney High School in Youngstown, he studied education at the University of Pittsburgh from 1959 to 1963 and graduated with a Bachelor of Science (BS Education). Between 1971 and 1981 he was the administrative director of the Mahoning County's Drugs Program. An interim post-graduate studies in specialist management science at the University of Pittsburgh, he finished 1973 with a Master of Science (M.Sc. Administration). He completed another postgraduate study in counseling at Youngstown State University in 1976 with a further Master of Science (M.Sc. Counseling). Between 1981 and 1985 he was the Mahoning County Sheriff .
In 1984 he was elected to the US House of Representatives for the first time as a representative of the Democrats , and after eight subsequent re-elections from January 3, 1985 to July 24, 2002, he represented the 17th congressional electoral district of Ohio.
He became famous for his one-minute speeches, which he often ended by saying "beam me up!" (From Star Trek ) as an expression of outrage at the state of US politics and the world in general .
The content of the speeches, the biting remarks, his dress style and his toupee were notorious.
On July 24, 2002 he was expelled from the US Congress by a resolution of the House of Representatives (House Resolution 495) after investigations into protection racket , bribery , obstruction of justice and tax evasion had started against him in 2001 . In 2002 he ran unsuccessfully as an independent candidate in the elections to the 108th US Congress in his previous constituency and was then sentenced by a court to several years ' imprisonment in the Allenwood Correctional Facility . The prosecution represented the future US Deputy Attorney General Craig S. Morford .
In September 2009, he was released from custody and then announced his candidacy for the 112th US Congress. In the 2010 election campaign, he spoke at tea party events and ran as an independent in his former constituency, the 17th congressional district of Ohio, in order to win back his mandate. He finished third in the November 2010 elections behind his successor Tim Ryan and Republican challenger Jim Graham with 16 percent of the vote.
