Career

In 1818 John Johnson and his mother came to Coshocton, Ohio, from his home in Northern Ireland . He received only a limited education and completed an apprenticeship in the tanning trade. He later worked in commerce and banking. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . In 1843 and 1844 he was a member of the Ohio Senate ; from 1849 to 1850 he was a delegate to a constitutional convention of his state.

In the congressional elections of 1850 Johnson was elected as an independent Democrat in the 16th  constituency of Ohio to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where he succeeded Moses Hoagland on March 4, 1851 . Since he renounced another candidacy in 1852, he could only complete one legislative period in Congress until March 3, 1853 . This was shaped by the events leading up to the civil war .

After his tenure in the US House of Representatives, John Johnson withdrew from politics. He stayed in Washington for a few years before returning to Coshocton. There he worked in banking and agriculture. He died on February 5, 1867.
