James Alexander junior

James Alexander Jr. (born October 17, 1789 in Delta , York County , Pennsylvania , †  September 5, 1846 in McNabb , Illinois ) was an American politician . Between 1837 and 1839 he represented the state of Ohio in the US House of Representatives .

Career

In 1799, James Alexander and his father moved to the Northwest Territory , where they settled in Belmont County near what would become the town of St. Clairsville . Later this area came to the meanwhile established state of Ohio. He worked in agriculture and transportation on the Ohio and Mississippi . He then went on to trade in St. Clairsville. At the same time he also embarked on a political career. In the mid-1830s, he joined the Whig Party , which was then founded . In 1830 and again from 1833 to 1834 he was a member of the Ohio House of Representatives . In 1831 he was an associate judge at the Court of Appeal.

In the congressional election of 1836 , Alexander was elected to the eleventh constituency of Ohio in the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where he succeeded William Kennon on March 4, 1837 . Since he was not confirmed in 1838, he could only serve one term in Congress until March 3, 1839 . After serving in the US House of Representatives, Alexander resumed his previous activities. In 1843 he moved to Wheeling in what is now West Virginia , where he acquired large estates. There he also spent his old age. He also owned considerable farmland in Illinois. James Alexander died on September 5, 1846 while visiting his son in McNabb. He was buried near St. Clairsville.
