Harrison GO Blake

Harrison Gray Otis Blake (born March 17, 1818 in Newfane , Vermont , †  April 16, 1876 in Medina , Ohio ) was an American politician . Between 1859 and 1863 he represented the state of Ohio in the US House of Representatives .

Life

Harrison Blake first moved to Salem, New York State . In 1830 he came to Guilford , Ohio. He attended the public schools in his respective homeland. He then studied medicine. In 1836 he settled in Medina, where he worked in trade. After studying law at the same time and being admitted to the bar, he began to work there in this profession. At the same time he also embarked on a political career. In 1846 and 1847 he was a member of the Ohio House of Representatives ; from 1848 to 1849 he was a member and president of the State Senate . In the 1850s he joined the Republican Party .

After the death of Congressman Cyrus Spink , Blake was elected to the House of Representatives in Washington, DC when he was due for election to the 14th seat of Ohio , where he took up his new mandate on October 11, 1859. After being re-elected, he could remain in Congress until March 3, 1863 . From 1861 this time was marked by the events of the civil war . In 1862 Blake declined to run again.

Since 1864 he took an active part in the civil war as a colonel in the army of the Union . He was stationed in the federal capital Washington, where he was one of the defenders of the city in the event that it should be attacked by the army of the Confederation . After the war, he turned down the post of governor in the Idaho Territory that had been offered to him . He practiced as a lawyer again, but was also active in banking and commerce. In August 1866 he took part as a delegate to the National Union Convention in Philadelphia . Harrison Blake died on April 16, 1876 in Medina, where he was also buried.
