David Meekison (1899)

David Meekison (born November 14, 1849 in Dundee , Scotland , †  February 12, 1915 in Napoleon , Ohio ) was an American politician . Between 1897 and 1901 he represented the state of Ohio in the US House of Representatives .

Career

In 1855, David Meekison and his parents came from his Scottish homeland to Napoleon, Ohio, where he attended public schools. Then he completed an apprenticeship in the printing trade. Between 1866 and 1869 he served in an artillery unit in the US Army . After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1873, he began to work in this profession in Napoleon. From 1873 to 1879 he was a district attorney in Henry County ; between 1881 and 1888 he was a probate judge. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . In July 1884, he took part as a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in Chicago , where Grover Cleveland was nominated as a presidential candidate. Meekison also got into the banking industry and founded the Meekison Bank in Napoleon. Between 1890 and 1897 he was mayor of this city.

In the congressional elections of 1896 Meekison was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the fifth constituency of Ohio , where he succeeded Republican Francis B. De Witt on March 4, 1897 . After being re-elected, he was able to complete two legislative terms in Congress until March 3, 1901 . During this time the Spanish-American War of 1898 fell . In 1900 he renounced another candidacy.

After his tenure in the US House of Representatives, David Meekison returned to work as a lawyer and in banking. He died on February 12, 1915 in Napoleon, where he was also buried.
