Reader W. Clarke

Reader Wright Clarke (born May 18, 1812 in Bethel , Clermont County , Ohio , †  May 23, 1872 in Batavia , Ohio) was an American politician . Between 1865 and 1869 he represented the state of Ohio in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Reader Clarke completed an apprenticeship in printing. After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1836, he began to work in this profession in Batavia. Politically, he then joined the Whig Party . For some years he was editor of a party newspaper in Shawneetown ( Illinois ). Between 1840 and 1842 he was a member of the Ohio House of Representatives . In the presidential election of 1844 , he was one of the Whigs' electors. From 1846 to 1852 he worked for the Clermont County court administration. After the dissolution of the Whigs, he joined the Republican Party, founded in 1854 .

In the congressional election of 1864 , Clarke was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the sixth constituency of Ohio , where he succeeded Chilton A. White on March 4, 1865 . After re-election, he was able to complete two legislative terms in Congress until March 3, 1869 . During this time the civil war ended . Since 1865, the work of Congress has been overshadowed by tension between Republicans and President Andrew Johnson , which culminated in a narrowly unsuccessful impeachment trial. In 1865 and 1868, the 13th and 14th amendments were ratified.

Between March 1869 and March 1870 Reader Clarke worked for the audit department in the Treasury ( Third Auditor of the Treasury ). He then worked for the Ohio tax authorities. He died on May 23, 1872 in Batavia, where he was also buried.
