James T. Begg

James Thomas Begg (born February 16, 1877 in Lima , Ohio , †  March 26, 1963 in Oklahoma City , Oklahoma ) was an American politician . Between 1919 and 1929 he represented the state of Ohio in the US House of Representatives .

Career

James Begg attended Columbus Grove public schools and Lima College . In 1903 he graduated from Wooster University , also in Ohio. Between 1905 and 1910 he directed the public schools in Columbus Grove as Superintendent of Public Schools . He then carried out the same activity in Ironton until 1913 and then in Sandusky until 1917 . Between 1917 and 1919 he worked for the American City Bureau of New York nationwide as advertising director. Politically, he joined the Republican Party .

In the 1918 congressional elections , Begg was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the 13th  constituency of Ohio , where he succeeded Democrat Arthur W. Overmyer on March 4, 1919 . After four re-elections, he was able to complete five legislative terms in Congress by March 3, 1929 . The 18th and 19th amendments to the Constitution were ratified in 1919 and 1920 . It was about the ban on the trade in alcoholic beverages and the nationwide introduction of women's suffrage .

In 1928 James Begg declined to run again. After his time in the US House of Representatives, he worked in banking, as a consultant and as a dairy farmer. In 1942 he sought unsuccessfully to return to Congress. From 1959 he lived in Oklahoma City, where he died on March 26, 1963. He was buried in Cleveland .
