Stephen "Steve" Austria (* 12. October 1958 in Cincinnati , Ohio ) is an American politician of the Republican Party . From 2009 to 2013 he was the first son of Filipino immigrants member of the House of Representatives of the United States for the seventh  congressional district of the state of Ohio.

biography

Austria was born in Cincinnati as the son of Filipino immigrants. His father had come to the United States to study medicine. Steve Austria graduated from Carroll High School in 1977 and then studied at Marquette University . Prior to being elected to the Ohio House of Representatives, he served as a financial advisor. He served as a Senator in the Ohio Senate for over 7 years .

In 2009, he finally moved into the US House of Representatives as the representative of Ohio's 7th Congressional District, after receiving 58.2 percent of the vote in the 2008 election . He succeeded Dave Hobson , who was no longer running. In the 2010 election he defended his seat with 62.5 percent of the vote. He was a member of the Committee on Appropriations .

Shortly before the turn of the year 2011, Austria announced that it would no longer run for the 2012 election, as its constituency was divided according to the results of the 2010 census and Austria would have had to compete against Republican party members in order to remain in Congress. He left office on January 3, 2013.

Austria lives in Beavercreek with his wife Eileen and their 3 children . He is of Roman Catholic faith .
