Career

Thomas Jenkins attended public schools and high schools in his homeland. In 1901 he graduated from Providence University in his hometown of Oak Hill. After a subsequent law degree at Ohio State University in Columbus and his admission as a lawyer in 1907, he began to work in Ironton in this profession. Between 1916 and 1920 he was a lawyer in Lawrence County . At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Republican Party . He was a member of the Ohio Senate in 1923 and 1924 . He also took part in 1920 and 1924 as a delegate at the Republican National Conventions , at which Warren G. Harding and later Calvin Coolidge were nominated as presidential candidates.

In the 1924 congressional elections , Jenkins was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the tenth constituency of Ohio , where he succeeded Israel M. Foster on March 4, 1925 . After 16 re-elections, he was able to complete a total of 17 legislative terms in Congress by January 3, 1959 . The New Deal laws of the federal government under President Franklin D. Roosevelt were passed there by 1941 , which Jenkins' party was rather hostile to. In 1935, the provisions of the 20th Amendment to the Constitution were applied for the first time , according to which the legislative period of the Congress ends or begins on January 3rd. Since 1941, the work of the Congress was also shaped by the events of World War II . In addition, Jenkins' time as a MP marked the start of the Cold War , the Korean War and, domestically, the civil rights movement . In 1958 he renounced another candidacy. He died in Worthington on December 21, 1959 and was buried in Ironton.
