Joseph J. McDowell

Joseph Jefferson McDowell (born November 13, 1800 in Burke County , North Carolina , †  January 17, 1877 in Hillsboro , Ohio ) was an American politician . Between 1843 and 1847 he represented the state of Ohio in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Born in what is now McDowell County , Joseph J. McDowell was the son of the same name Congressman Joseph McDowell Jr. (1756-1801) from North Carolina. In 1805 he moved to Kentucky with his mother ; in 1817 he came to Augusta County , Virginia . He attended the public schools in his respective homeland and then became active in agriculture. In 1824 he came to Ohio's Highland County , where he also worked in agriculture. From 1829 he was active in Hillsboro in trade. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . In 1832 he was a member of the Ohio House of Representatives ; the following year he was a member of the State Senate . In 1834 he was appointed Brigadier General of the State Militia. After a subsequent law degree and his admission as a lawyer in 1835, he began to work in Hillsboro in this profession. In 1840 he ran for the US House of Representatives without success.

In the congressional elections of 1842 , McDowell was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the seventh constituency of Ohio , where he succeeded William Russell on March 4, 1843 . After re-election, he was able to complete two legislative terms in Congress until March 3, 1847 . These were shaped by the events of the Mexican-American War . From 1843 to 1845, McDowell was chairman of the Committee on Accounts .

After his time in the US House of Representatives, he returned to work as a lawyer and in agriculture. He died on January 17, 1877 in Hillsboro, where he was also buried.
