Enver Hoxhaj (* 1969 in Suva Reka , Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia ) is a Kosovar politician ( PDK ) and historian. From February 22, 2011 to December 2014, he headed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Kosovo. He held this office again from the beginning of June 2016 to the beginning of August 2017.

Career

Hoxhaj studied history at the University of Pristina , where he obtained his first degree in 1993. For his doctorate, he carried out research between 1994 and 2000, mainly in Vienna . He also stayed at universities in Berlin, Munich, Rome, Bologna, Florence and Paris.

During his stay in Austria, he was a research assistant at the University of Vienna and, between 1996 and 2000, head of a research group on the history of the Balkans at the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for Human Rights . He received his doctorate in 2000 with a thesis on "Investigations into the history of Kosova in Roman times: the military, cities, society and population" with the archaeologist Renate Pillinger at the University of Vienna.

Between 2003 and 2004, Hoxhaj was a fellow at the London School of Economics at the Center for Study of the Global Governance . Hoxhaj has presented academic papers in English, German and Albanian, mainly on the topics of nationalism and national identity and ethnic conflicts. He was a member of the Kosovo delegation in the negotiations on the independence of Kosovo, which took place in Vienna between 2005 and 2007 and which were chaired by the Finnish diplomat and UN envoy Martti Ahtisaari .

In 2006 he was appointed Associate Professor at the Faculty of Political Science at the University of Pristina . In January 2008 he was appointed Minister of Education, Science and Technology of Kosovo. He is a member of the Democratic Party of Kosovo (PDK) . Furthermore, Hoxhaj was chairman of the Committee on Education, Culture and Youth of the Parliament of the Republic of Kosovo .

From 2011 to December 2014 he was Foreign Minister of the Republic of Kosovo.

Private

Hoxhaj speaks and writes fluently in Albanian, English, German and Serbo-Croatian. He lives in Pristina , is married and has two children.
