Henry Lee Morey (born April 8, 1841 in Collinsville , Butler County , Ohio , †  December 29, 1902 in Hamilton , Ohio) was an American politician . Between 1881 and 1884 and again from 1889 to 1891 he represented the state of Ohio in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Henry Morey was a cousin of James Whitcomb (1795-1842), who was both US Senator and Governor of Indiana . He attended public schools in his home country and then studied at Miami University in Oxford . During the civil war he served in the army of the Union , in which he rose to captain. In the meantime he became a prisoner of war, from which he was released again through an exchange. After a subsequent law degree at the Indianapolis Law School and his admission as a lawyer in 1867, he began to work in Hamilton in this profession. Between 1871 and 1875 he acted as the city's legal representative. In 1873 he was also the prosecutor for the local Butler County. Politically, he joined the Republican Party . In 1875 he ran unsuccessfully for the Ohio Senate .

In the congressional election of 1880 , Morey was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the third constituency of Ohio , where he succeeded John A. McMahon on March 4, 1881 . Two years later he was re-elected in the seventh district of his state. There he replaced John P. Leedom on March 4, 1883 . His opponent, James E. Campbell , appealed against the outcome of the election. After this was granted, Morey had to cede his mandate to Campbell on June 20, 1884. In June 1884 he took part as a delegate to the Republican National Convention in Chicago . In the elections of 1888 , Morey was re- elected to Congress in the Seventh District of Ohio , where he replaced James Campbell on March 4, 1889, who had also returned to the US House of Representatives after a hiatus two years earlier.

Since he was not sustained in 1890, Henry Morey could only serve one more term in Congress until March 3, 1891. After his time in the US House of Representatives, he practiced as a lawyer again. He died on December 29, 1902 in Hamilton, where he was also buried.
