John P. Leedom

John Peter Leedom (born December 20, 1847 in Adams County , Ohio , †  March 18, 1895 in Toledo , Ohio) was an American politician . Between 1881 and 1883 he represented the state of Ohio in the US House of Representatives .

Career

John Leedom attended public schools in his home country and then until 1863 Smith's Mercantile College in Portsmouth . He then worked there as a teacher for some time. He also worked in agriculture. In 1874 he was elected clerk of the court of common pleas at the Adams County Court of Appeals. He was confirmed in this office three years later. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . In 1879 he was a member of the state board of his party.

In the congressional election of 1880 , Leedom was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the seventh constituency of Ohio , where he succeeded Frank H. Hurd on March 4, 1881 . Since he was not confirmed in 1882, he could only serve one term in Congress until March 3, 1883 . Between 1884 and 1890 Leedom held the ceremonial role of Sergeant at Arms in the US House of Representatives. He died in Toledo on March 18, 1895 and was buried in Manchester .
