Thomas William Ludlow Ashley (born January 11, 1923 in Toledo , Ohio , † June 15, 2010 in Leland , Michigan ) was an American politician of the Democratic Party . Ashley was a member of the House of Representatives from 1955 to 1981 , representing the 9th District of Ohio.

Life

Ashley is the great-grandson of James Mitchell Ashley , who was also a congressman from Ohio. He studied at Yale University , where he was a member of the Skull & Bones fraternity with the future President George HW Bush . He interrupted his studies during World War II, where he served in the US Army in the Pacific. He then finished his studies at Yale in 1948. He began to work and at the same time to study law in an evening class. In 1951 he finished his studies at Ohio State University and was admitted to the bar that same year.

In 1952, Ashley started working for Radio Free Europe . For the station he worked until March 1, 1954, when he decided to resign to run for the United States House of Representatives. There he served in 13 terms and was also chairman of various committees. In the 1980 election, he lost to Republican candidate Ed Weber and left parliament.
