John Armstrong Smith

John Armstrong Smith (born September 23, 1814 in Hillsboro , Highland County , Ohio , †  March 7, 1892 ibid) was an American politician . Between 1869 and 1873 he represented the state of Ohio in the US House of Representatives .

Career

John Smith studied at Miami University in Oxford until 1834 . After studying law and his admission as a lawyer in 1835, he began to work in Hillsboro in this profession. At the same time he embarked on a political career. In 1841 he was a member of the Ohio House of Representatives ; In 1850 he was a delegate to a constitutional convention of his state. He later joined the Republican Party, founded in 1854 .

In the 1868 congressional election , Smith was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the sixth constituency of Ohio , where he succeeded Reader W. Clarke on March 4, 1869 . After re-election, he was able to complete two legislative terms in Congress until March 3, 1873 . In 1870 the 15th Amendment to the Constitution was ratified. After his time in the US House of Representatives, Smith practiced law again. In 1873 he was again a delegate to a constitutional convention for Ohio. He died on March 7, 1892 in Hillsboro, where he was also buried.
