Robert H. Nugen

Robert Hunter Nugen (born July 16, 1809 in Washington County , Pennsylvania , †  February 28, 1872 in Newcomerstown , Ohio ) was an American politician . Between 1861 and 1863 he represented the state of Ohio in the US House of Representatives .

Career

In 1811, Robert Nugen and his parents came to Columbiana County , Ohio. He received only a limited education. Since 1828 he lived in Tuscarawas County , where he worked in agriculture. He also worked as an entrepreneur. He held several local offices and became a member of the Democratic Party . In 1860 he attended the Democratic National Convention in Charleston , at which delegates could not agree on a presidential candidate.

In the congressional election of 1860 Nugen was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 15th  constituency of Ohio , where he succeeded Republican William Helmick on March 4, 1861 . Until March 3, 1863, he was able to complete a legislative period in Congress . This was shaped by the events of the civil war . After his time in the US House of Representatives, Nugen withdrew from politics. He lived in Newcomerstown, where he was the head of administration for the Ohio Canal . He held this position until his death on February 28, 1872.
