Lawrence T. Neal

Lawrence Talbot Neal (born September 22, 1844 in Parkersburg , Virginia , †  November 2, 1905 in Chillicothe , Ohio ) was an American politician . Between 1873 and 1877 he represented the state of Ohio in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Born in what is now West Virginia , Lawrence Neal had a good education. In 1864 he moved to Chillicothe, Ohio. After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1866, he began to work there in his profession. In the years 1867 and 1868 he was the legal representative of this city; from 1870 to 1872 he served as the prosecutor in Ross County . At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . In the congressional election of 1872 , Neal was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the seventh constituency of Ohio , where he succeeded Samuel Shellabarger on March 4, 1873 . After a re-election, he was able to complete two legislative terms in Congress until March 3, 1877 . In 1876 he was not re-elected.

After his time in the US House of Representatives ended, Neal practiced law again. In 1878 he applied unsuccessfully to return to Congress; in 1887 a failed candidacy for the Ohio Senate . In June 1888 he took part as a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in St. Louis , on which President Grover Cleveland was nominated for re-election, which was unsuccessful. In the gubernatorial elections of 1893, Lawrence Neal was defeated by future President William McKinley . He died on November 2, 1905 in Chillicothe, where he was also buried.
