Stephen Ross Harris

Stephen Ross Harris (born May 22, 1824 in Massillon , Ohio , †  January 15, 1905 in Bucyrus , Ohio) was an American politician . Between 1895 and 1897 he represented the state of Ohio in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Stephen Harris attended public schools in his home country, followed by Washington College in Pennsylvania , Norwalk Seminary in Ohio and the Western Reserve College , which was then located in Hudson . After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1849, he began to work in this profession in Columbus . In the same year he moved his residence and his law firm to Bucyrus. He was mayor there in 1852, 1853, 1861 and 1862. In 1861 he was also Deputy United States Marshal . Otherwise, he continued to practice as a lawyer. In 1893 and 1894 he served as chairman of the Ohio Bar Association.

In the congressional election of 1894 Harris was elected as a candidate for the Republican Party in the 13th  constituency of Ohio in the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where he succeeded Darius D. Hare on March 4, 1895 . Since he was not confirmed in 1896, he could only serve one term in Congress until March 3, 1897 . After his time in the US House of Representatives, he practiced again as a lawyer in Bucyrus, where he died on January 15, 1905. His nephew Ebenezer B. Finley (1833-1916) was also a congressman.
