William J. White (1893)

William John White (* 7. October 1850 near the Rice Lake , Canada ; † 16th February 1923 in Cleveland , Ohio ) was an American politician of the Republican Party . March 4, 1893 to March 3, 1895 he was a member of the House of Representatives of the United States for the 20th  congressional district of the state of Ohio.

biography

White was born near Rice Lake in Canada in 1850. At the age of 7 he moved to the United States with his parents. They settled in Cleveland . He went to school in Cleveland. In 1869 he began to build up his own existence as a confectionery manufacturer. Later his company, WJ White Chicle Co., made chewing gum . In 1889 he was mayor of West Cleveland, now part of Cleveland.

In the 1892 congressional election , White ran as a Republican Party candidate in Ohio's 20th constituency. He won the election and moved into the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC, where he sat for a term in office for his constituency. He decided not to stand for election anymore. He retired back to his company. White died in his hometown in February 1923. He was buried in Lake View Cemetery .
