Oliver P. Bolton
Oliver Payne Bolton (born February 22, 1917 in Cleveland , Ohio , † December 13, 1972 in Palm Beach , Florida ) was an American politician . Between 1953 and 1957 and again from 1963 to 1965 he represented the state of Ohio in the US House of Representatives .
Career
Oliver Bolton was the son of Congressmen Chester C. Bolton (1882-1939) and Frances P. Bolton (1885-1977). He was also a great-grandson of Henry B. Payne (1810-1896), who had represented the state of Ohio in both houses of Congress . Until 1935 he attended the Milton Academy in Massachusetts . He then studied at Harvard College until 1939 . Between 1939 and 1941 he served in the national guard of his state. During the Second World War he was deployed in the Pacific from 1941 to 1946. He was a member of the Marine Corps . After studying law at Western Reserve University Law School and being admitted to the bar in 1947, he began working in this profession in Cleveland. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Republican Party . In 1948 and 1949 he was chairman of the Republican Youth Organization in Ohio; from 1950 to 1951 he was a member of the Federal Executive of the Young Republicans . Between 1952 and 1963 he also edited two Ohio newspapers.
In the 1952 congressional election , Bolton was elected to the Eleventh constituency of Ohio in the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where he succeeded Walter E. Brehm on January 3, 1953 . After a re-election, he was able to complete two legislative terms in Congress until January 3, 1957. These were shaped by the events of the Cold War and the civil rights movement . In 1956 he renounced another candidacy.
Between February and August 1957, Bolton was Ohio Secretary of Commerce ( Director of Commerce ). In the elections of 1962 he was re-elected to Congress in the eleventh district of his state, where he replaced Robert E. Cook on January 3, 1963 . Since he was not confirmed in 1964, he could only serve one more term in the US House of Representatives until January 3, 1965. During this time the Vietnam War began . Between 1965 and 1972 he was a partner at Prescott, Merrill, Turben & Co , with whom he worked in the investment industry. He died on December 13, 1972 in Palm Beach and was buried in Cleveland.
