Ebenezer B. Finley

Ebenezer Byron Finley (born July 31, 1833 in Orrville , Ohio , †  August 22, 1916 in Bucyrus , Ohio) was an American politician . Between 1877 and 1881 he represented the state of Ohio in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Ebenezer Finley was the nephew of Congressman Stephen Ross Harris (1824-1905). He attended the public schools in his home country. After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1862, he began to work in this profession in Bucyrus. At the beginning of the civil war he helped set up a company of infantry. For some time he also served as a first lieutenant in this unit. Politically, he joined the Democratic Party .

In the congressional election of 1876 Finley was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 14th  constituency of Ohio , where he succeeded Jacob Pitzer Cowan on March 4, 1877 . After being re-elected, he was able to complete two terms in Congress until March 3, 1881 . From 1879 he represented the eighth district of his state there as the successor to J. Warren Keifer . Also from 1879 he headed the Committee on Public Expenses. In 1880 he renounced another candidacy.

After his tenure in the US House of Representatives, Ebenezer Finley practiced law again. In 1884 he served as the Adjutant General of Ohio in command of his state's National Guard. He also served as a judge in the Ohio Third Judicial District. After that he continued his legal practice. He died on August 22, 1916 in Bucyrus, where he was also buried.
