Charles H. Grosvenor
Charles Henry Grosvenor (born September 20, 1833 in Pomfret , Windham County , Connecticut , † October 30, 1917 in Athens , Ohio ) was an American politician . Between 1885 and 1907 he represented the state of Ohio in the US House of Representatives twice .
Career
In 1838, Charles Grosvenor moved with his parents to Athens County , Ohio, where he attended public schools. After that he taught himself as a teacher for some time. After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1857, he began to work in this profession. During the Civil War , he served in an Ohio infantry unit that was part of the Union Army . He rose to the rank of Colonel and Brevet Brigadier General . After the war, he held various local offices in his homeland in Ohio and pursued a political career as a member of the Republican Party . From 1874 to 1878 he was a member of the Ohio House of Representatives , of which he was president for two years. Between 1880 and 1888 he was a board member of the Ohio Soldiers and Sailors Orphans' Home in Xenia . He headed this body for five years. In 1896 and 1900 he took part as a delegate at the Republican National Conventions , at each of which William McKinley was nominated as a presidential candidate.
In the congressional election of 1884 Grosvenor was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 15th constituency of Ohio , where he succeeded Beriah Wilkins on March 4, 1885 . After two re-elections in the 14th district of his state, he was able to complete three legislative terms in Congress until March 3, 1891 . In 1890 he was not nominated for re-election by his party. In the elections of 1892 Grosvenor in the eleventh district of Ohio was re-elected to Congress, where he replaced John M. Pattison on March 4, 1893 . After six re-elections, he could remain there until March 3, 1907. In 1906 he was no longer nominated for re-election by his party. During his time as Congressman, the Spanish-American War of 1898 fell . From 1895 to 1897 he was chairman of the Ministry of Finance's Expenditure Control Committee; from 1897 to 1899 he headed the mining committee. Between 1899 and 1907 he sat on the Committee on the Merchant Navy and Fisheries.
After his time in the US House of Representatives, Charles Grosvenor practiced as a lawyer again. From 1910 until his death, he was Chairman of the Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Park Commission . He died on October 30, 1917 in Athens, where he was also buried. His nephew Charles G. Bond (1877–1974) was a member of Congress for New York State .
