history

The first European settlers settled in what is now the city of Athens in 1797. The current state of Ohio was part of the Northwest Territory at that time , but became an independent state in 1803, and the following year Ohio University was founded in Athens, the first university in the former Northwest Territory.

In 1843 the Hocking Canal was opened, which connects the Ohio River with Nelsonville and runs south of Athens. In 1857 Athens was connected to the national rail network.

The industrial development of the city began with the production of salt and led to iron production and coal mining. Today Ohio University is the city's largest employer.

Athens was only granted city status in 1912, when the population exceeded 5,000. Today, many of Athens' working professionals reside in Athens County, which has a population of approximately 72,000.
