Ocean City is a city in Worcester County in the US state of Maryland . It is located at the southern end of a 16 km long island that separates the Atlantic from the mainland. The city and island are known nationwide for their tourist attractions. The island is geographically part of the Delmarva Peninsula . Ocean City has 7,173 inhabitants (as of 2000) with a land area of ​​11.8 km² and a water area of ​​82.4 km².

On December 30, 1958, the oil tanker African Queen ran onto a sandbank off Ocean City and caused environmental damage over several years due to the oil load that escaped when the ship broke up.
