The African Queen was an oil tanker flying the flag of Liberia . It was built in 1955. The ship was 180 m long, 22 m wide and measured at 13,800 GRT.

Downfall

The ship was on its way from Cartagena , Colombia, to Paulsboro , New Jersey , with a cargo of heavy fuel oil . Due to a navigation error, it ran into a sandbank on December 30, 1958 and broke. The nearby seaside resort of Ocean City suffered economic losses for many years as the beach was contaminated by the oil.
