history

In 1787, due to the settlement of the northwestern territory and the possible establishment of a state in this area, the Continental Congress demanded the establishment of educational institutions. In 1797, settlers from Marietta, migrating along the Hocking River , chose Athens as the site of the later Ohio University, as this place lies exactly between Chillicothe, Ohio's original capital , and their hometown.

One year after Ohio joined the United States , Ohio University was founded on February 18, 1804 under the name American Western University . The first three students did not enroll until 1808.
