Edward James Roye (born February 3, 1815 in Newark , Ohio , † February 12, 1872 in Monrovia , Liberia ) was an American - Liberian politician and the fifth President of Liberia from 1870 to 1871 .

Roye was born into a wealthy family in Newark, Ohio . He emigrated to Liberia in 1846 and became a trader. Roye entered politics in 1849 and became president in 1870 in the midst of a budget crisis. In 1871 he was overthrown and succeeded by his Vice President James Skivring Smith .

He was tried for irregularities in the issuance of government bonds, but managed to escape. It is believed that he drowned on February 12, 1872 while attempting to board an English ship in the port of Monrovia. He may also have died as a result of injuries inflicted on him after attempting to escape, or he was drowned.

The Edward J. Roye Building in Monrovia, built in the 1970s, was a government building and was named after him.
