Newark (also New Ark ) is a city in Licking County in the state of Ohio in the United States of America . It is located near the Licking River and is approximately 53 kilometers (33 miles) east of Columbus . In 1900 the place had 14,270 inhabitants, in 2000 there were 46,279 inhabitants. Newark is the seat of the county government .

history
Newark was an important center of cultural history during prehistory . The Newark area was established during the Hopewell civilization between 100 BC. Inhabited by Indians until 500 AD. They built many mounds of earth, including the largest in the Ohio River Valley in Newark . Observatory Mound, Observatory Circle and the connected octagon (octagon) are about one kilometer long. The octagon alone is big enough to accommodate the Coliseum of Rome four times. The Cheops pyramid could be accommodated in the Observatory Circle. The 360 meter wide Great Circle is, at least in terms of construction, the largest ring-shaped earth wall in America. The approximately 2.5 m high earth wall is surrounded - with the exception of the entrance - by a 1.5 m deep moat, at the entrance the dimensions are impressively larger. Geodesists and astronomers specializing in the construction period found out in their research and investigations into the location, size, orientation and relationship of the ramparts with one another that the residents of the time had good scientific knowledge.
The area on which the ramparts are located is currently rented by the Moundbuilders Country Club and is used as a golf course .
In Newark was a station on the Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, Chicago and St. Louis Railroad , which connected Pittsburgh with Chicago and St. Louis .

The Newark City School District includes eight elementary schools , two intermediate schools, three middle schools , Newark High School and the Newark Digital Academy, which also enables distance learning. There are also private schools in town.
