The Licking River is a 65 km long right tributary of the Muskingum River in the central US state of Ohio . Outflow is via the Muskingum, Ohio and Mississippi Rivers into the Gulf of Mexico . It belongs to the Mississippi river system and drains an area of around 2,018 km². The two source rivers North Fork Licking River and South Fork Licking River unite at the town of Newark in Licking County and form the Licking River. The 55 km long North Fork Licking River has its source in southwest Morrow County near Centerburg , while the 50 km long South Fork of Licking River has its source in southwest Licking County. From Newark, the Licking River flows east through the Black Hand Gorge State Nature Reserve , a 6 km long sandstone formation with a canyon formed by the river. Then the Licking River turns to the southeast and flows into the Muskingum River at Zanesville . Both rivers are spanned by a bridge shaped like a Y, the Y-Bridge. A few kilometers above Zanesville, the US Army Corps of Engineers built a dam in 1961, through which Dillon Lake is formed. According to the Geographic Names Information System , the river was also referred to as Licking Creek, Nepepenime Sepe, Pataskala River, Salt Lick Creek and similar names in its settlement history.
