Amos Sawyer

Amos Sawyer (* 1945 ) was President of Liberia from 1990 to 1994 .

Early years

Sawyer embarked on an academic career and was Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Liberia from 1980 to 1984 . During this time he was chairman of the constitutional commission that met after the assassination of President William Tolbert .

After the assassination of President Samuel Doe on November 22, 1990, Sawyer took over the chairmanship of the Government of National Unity , which initially had to take its seat in Ghana . The West African Economic Community ECOWAS had established the transitional government through the deployment of the multinational peacekeeping force ECOMOG . Sawyer's term ended on March 7, 1994, after originally hoping he would only serve six months.

The civil war continued unabated during his reign. The rebel leaders Charles Taylor , "Prince" Yormie Johnson and various others fought for power in the country, with Taylor later prevailing. Sawyer is a member of the Liberian People's Party , which on July 19, 1997 won 1.61% of the vote in the presidential election and one of 64 seats in the House of Representatives in elections, the quality of which was divided. 75% of the vote went to Taylor, who was believed to have fought on otherwise.

Academics

He has a Doctor of Philosophy in Political Science since graduating from Northwestern University in Illinois . He currently teaches political theory and analysis at Indiana University at Bloomington. Sawyer worked several times for international organizations, for example for the United Nations and in 2001 on behalf of the Organization for African Unity as chairman of the monitoring commission for the elections in Zimbabwe .

He had written several books on Liberian politics since the 1980s and published his latest book in the summer of 2005.
