John Michael Krois

John Michael Krois (born November 24, 1943 in Cincinnati , Ohio; † October 30, 2010 in Berlin ) was an internationally renowned Cassirer expert. Since 1994 he has been teaching as a private lecturer ( apl. Prof. ) for philosophy at the Humboldt University in Berlin .

Life

John Michael Krois received his PhD in 1975 from Pennsylvania State University under Donald Phillip Verene with a dissertation on Ernst Cassirer . In 1988 he completed his habilitation at the Philipps University of Marburg . John M. Krois is best known as a Cassirer expert; he was one of the main editors of the unpublished writings of Ernst Cassirer ( postponed manuscripts and texts , Hamburg, Felix Meiner Verlag, 1995 ff.)

Krois was a Fellow at the Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin (1992), British Academy visiting scholar at the Warburg Institute in London (1998), Yale University Kniecke Library Hermann Broch Fellow (1998), since 2000 Honorary Research Fellow in the Center for Intercultural Studies , University of Glasgow , and in 2003/04 Ernst-Cassirer visiting professor at the Swedish Institute for Advanced Studies. He also taught at Emory University in Atlanta and at the Universities of Braunschweig , Trier and Düsseldorf .

Krois was most recently co-editor of the Zeitschrift für Kulturphilosophie and from 2008 until his death in 2010 he was the spokesman for the DFG- funded research group Image Act and Embodiment.
