The Democratic National Committee (DNC) is the national organization of the Democratic Party of the United States . It runs fundraising and represents the political positions of the entire party.

The first DNC was formed at the 1848 Democratic National Convention in Baltimore . The DNC is supplemented by the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee and the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee , which take on these tasks for members of the House of Representatives and the Senate , respectively .

Members of the DNC are initially the chairmen of the national parties and their deputies. Further seats are assigned to the parties of the individual states depending on the population and democratic votes, others go to representatives of democratic officials or certain interest groups, a small number goes to the foreign organization. In addition, members are appointed by the chairman.

When the Democratic Party provides the US president , the DNC works very closely with him and is responsible for supporting his goals. If not, it is authoritative spokesman for the Democrats as a party as a whole. In the case of presidential elections, it organizes the Democratic National Convention and, under the supervision of the presidential candidate, collects funds, conducts polls and coordinates campaign strategy. It lays down the rules for the primaries and is responsible for fundraising .

Similar committees exist in the states, most major cities, counties, and electoral districts. The chairman of the DNC is appointed by the committee on the proposal of the US president or, if the president is not a Democrat, by an election of the committee members in the states. Former chairwoman Wasserman Schultz had to resign after a scandal in 2016: the committee had preferred Hillary Clinton as candidate in the internal party presidential election - although the statutes prescribe a neutral stance. The current chairman is Tom Perez. His deputy is Keith Ellison.

In the Republican Party , by comparison, there is the Republican National Committee ; at the Green Party the Green National Committee, at the Libertarian Party the Libertarian National Committee.
