Terry McAuliffe (2016)

Terence Richard "Terry" McAuliffe (born February 9, 1957 in Syracuse , New York ) is an American entrepreneur and politician of the Democratic Party . The co-leader of Bill Clinton's re-election campaign as president in 1996 became a major fundraiser and chaired the Democratic National Committee from 2001 to 2005 . In 2008, he led Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign and was governor of the US state of Virginia from 2014 to 2018 .

Career and political advancement

McAuliffe is the son of real estate agent Jack McAuliffe, who was treasurer of the local Democratic Party. He is a descendant of Irish immigrants and a practicing Catholic. He graduated from Bishop Ludden Junior / Senior High School in 1975.

Mcaufiffe received his bachelor's degree from the Catholic University of America in Washington, DC in 1979. After his graduation, he took a job in the re-election campaign of Jimmy Carter and at the age of 22 became its national chief financial officer. He then completed a law degree at Georgetown University in Washington, DC, and received his doctorate in law in 1984.

At the age of 14, McAuliffe started his first own small business: McAuliffe Driveway Maintenance , a parking lot guard. The Washington Post summarized that McAuliffe had a million dollar fortune as a "banker, real estate agent, building contractor, hotel owner and Internet venture capitalist".

Governor of Virginia

McAuliffe in 2013

Back in 2009, McAuliffe applied to be a Democratic candidate for election to governor of Virginia. In the primary of his party, however, he only achieved 26.4% of the vote and thus place second behind Creigh Deeds , who came to a share of 49.8%. Deeds was then defeated by Republican Bob McDonnell .

Four years later, McAuliffe was nominated unopposed by the Democrats. In the November 2013 election he won with 47.8% of the vote against the Republican candidate Ken Cuccinelli (45.2%). Since the libertarian candidate Robert Sarvis was able to unite 6.5% of the vote, McAuliffe did not achieve an absolute majority, but this is not intended for the election. The election campaign was considered to be one of the toughest controversies in United States politics and was seen as a test of federal policy. For example, the work of McAuliffe's campaign manager Robby Mook , who is credited with a large share of the win, is considered a prerequisite for Hillary Clinton to introduce him in 2015 as the manager of her 2016 presidential campaign. At McAuliffe's side, Ralph Northam , another Democrat, was elected lieutenant governor . The election of Democrat McAuliffe during the presidency of Democrat Barack Obama was remarkable in that every gubernatorial election since 1965 has always been defeated by the incumbent US president's party.

Since Virginia is the only US state to exclude the incumbent governor from direct re-election, McAuliffe could not run again in the November 2017 election. His previous deputy, Ralph Northam, was elected as the new governor and took office on January 13, 2018.
