Gary Richard Herbert (* 7. May 1947 in American Fork , Utah ) is an American politician of the Republican Party and in 2009 Governor of the State of Utah.

biography

Gary Herbert was born in American Fork in 1947 and grew up in Orem . After attending Orem High School, he served as a Mormon missionary in the eastern United States for two years . He then graduated from the Mormon Brigham Young University in Provo . In 1976 Herbert graduated from the National Association of Realtors' Graduate Realtor Institute course and began working as a real estate agent . He was an instructor at Utah Valley Technical College for seven years and served as director of the Utah Association of Realtors . Herbert served in the Utah Army National Guard .

From 1990 to 2005, Herbert was one of three elected county commissioners in Utah County . In the pre-election campaign in 2004 he sought at first the post of governor of Utah, but then accepted the offer of Jon Huntsman , as its Deputy Governor to run. They won the election, whereupon Herbert held the office of vice governor from 2005. In the 2008 election they were re-elected with 77.9% of the vote.

On May 16, 2009, Huntsman was proposed by US President Barack Obama as the United States Ambassador to the People's Republic of China . On August 11, 2009, Herbert succeeded him in the office of governor. In November 2010 he was confirmed in office with 64:32 percent of the vote against the Democrat Peter Corroon . In 2012 he was re-elected. In 2014 and 2015, he was assistant director of the National Governors Association . On November 8, 2016, Herbert won re-election as governor of Utah.

Herbert is married to Jeanette Herbert, née Snelson, with whom he has six children and eight grandchildren. He is a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormons).
