Governor of Utah
He held the office of governor of Utah from January 7, 1957 to January 4, 1965. During his first term he reorganized the extensive executive agencies, increased state funding for schools and highway expansion, planned a state building program and started a state library - and green area programs. During his second term, he was interested in creating Canyonlands National Park in southeastern Utah. Clyde opposed the settlement of large areas that were intended exclusively for parks, instead he preferred the multiple uses of land that was used for mining and pasture. The point was resolved in 1964 when the US Congress created a smaller park than originally intended.
